The authors discuss the mechanism of F-centre production in SrCl 2 ; particular attention is paid to the effects of dopants and the formation of perturbed F-centres. Hole centres are also considered. Here it is shown that, when alkali metal impurities are present, the predominant defect at higher temperatures will comprise a Cl 2 molecule adjacent to the alkali metal substitutional.
