CRISPR-Cas systems provide a rapid, highly sensitive, and specific next-generation molecular diagnostic platform for infectious diseases, with potential for point-of-care testing.
Why the study?
Current molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases lack point-of-care utility, driving the need for faster, simpler, and cheaper alternatives.
CRISPR-Cas systems offer a promising, highly specific, sensitive, and low-cost alternative to traditional molecular diagnostics for point-of-care infectious disease testing.
Need for faster, simpler diagnostics persists; leaves open whether novel methods can supplant PCR in routine infectious disease testing.
Diagnostic for infectious disease is the most important to prevent the spread of infection and reduce the social and economical damage. To achieve the diagnostic for infectious disease, many diagnostic methods such as molecular and immunological diagnostics have been developed and applied to medical testing. Molecular diagnostics, for example realtime PCR, are considered as golden standards because of high specificity and sensitivity, but there is still need to develop faster, simpler, and cheaper diagnostic for point-of-care testing. Therefore, diagnostic based on CRISPR-Cas system is proposed as next-generation of molecular diagnostics for infection disease, because they have not only high specificity and sensitivity but also simple testing and low-cost device system. Here, we summarize CRISPR-Cas system and diagnostics both of cases before COVID-19 outbreaks and during COVID-19 pandemic.
