The thermal behavior of polystyrene in dilute solution has been studied by a number of methods of physical chemistry. By ultraviolet and infrared absorption measurements and other means, it has been shown that the helical conformation ascribed to the crystalline isotactic polystyrene is preserved in solution below 50°C. but vanishes beyond 80°C. Atactic polystyrene shows similar behavior, and thus probably contains stereoregular sequences. Detailed viscosity and light scattering studies in various theta solvents are presented.
