Anaerobic degradation of 2‐, 3‐, and 4‐chlorophenol, with and without phenol supplementation, was investigated. 2‐Chlorophenol was readily degraded and mineralized at concentrations as high as 285 mg L‐1. However, 3‐ and 4‐chlorophenol were only degraded after very long acclimation times. Concentrations >30 mg L‐1 of 3‐or 4‐chlorophenol inhibited ultimate phenol degradation whereas concentrations of 2‐chlorophenol < 97 mg L‐1 were not inhibitory to ultimate phenol degradation. Semi‐continuous cultures demonstrated degradation of 2‐chlorophenol at 100 mg L‐1 with methane production.
