A thermodynamic theory of heterophase structures resulted from phase transformations in solids has been suggested. The theory decribes the volume fractions of phases, habitus parameters, internal substructure, and the mutual arrangement of crystals of new phases. Two main effects, caused by the tendency to lower the elastic energy of internal stresses have been found: the fragmentation of the new phase into domains and the formation of ensembles of the crystals or regions of new phases arranged regularly inside the parent phase.
