A novel transparent conductive oxide (TCO)-free monolithic back-contact dye-sensitized solar cell (mBC-DSC) architecture is proposed, capable of achieving conversion efficiencies of 4.6%. The mBC-DSCs consist of two coplanar charge-collecting electrodes separated by a porous ZrO2 spacer layer. The mesoporous dye-sensitized TiO2 film is located on top of the upper electrode. This novel device architecture eliminates the need for TCO electrodes in DSCs, enabling the use of highly conductive metal electrodes to produce low-cost flexible dye-sensitized solar cells.
