The widths of the - ½ to - 3/2 and - ½ to + 3/2 transitions in synthetic vapour phase ruby have been measured as a function of polar angle θ for specimens showing different degrees of mosaic imperfection. Anisotropic line broadening was observed with maxima near θ = 45°. The magnitude of the broadening was proportional to the mean mosaic misorientation giving an increase in total linewidth of up to two times for misorientations of less than 1°.
