Abrasion-resistant (AR) steel plates, particularly the 500 HB grade, are extensively used in both wear and structural applications. These plates are designed for service conditions that demand a combination of abrasion resistance, strength and toughness. Steel plates are required to have stable abrasion resistance properties through thickness and to withstand long-term damage under various environmental conditions. The major requirement for AR steel plates is hardness. The hardness of the plate is achieved via effective quenching, which produces a martensitic microstructure. Steel plates with high hardness requirements usually demand carbon contents equal to 0.25% or higher. Achieving a balance of high strength, toughness and ductility is technically challenging, especially for plates with a hardness of 500 HB or above.
