An isolated-particle model is presented to explain track formation in fission-fragment-irradiated thin films. Experimental evidence to support the model is based on observations on Au and Al films. The tracks are explained on the basis that fast-moving fission fragments lose energy mainly by electronic excitations causing localized particle heating and vaporization. Energy transfer processes are discussed for both the metal and metal oxide particle films. (H.D.R.)
