Patulin (4-hydroxy-4H-furo [3,2c] pyran-2 (6H)-one), a mycotoxin produced by several species in the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Byssochlamys, was produced in gram/liter quantities in poultry feed by P. patulum. The patulin LD50 dosage for White Leghorn cockerels was 170 mg./kg. Sublethal feeding produced hemorrhaging, limited to the digestive tract.
