The previously established facts that the kinetic energy of a fission pair as a function of the mass ratio of the two fragments shows a drastic dip in the symmetric fission region and the saw-tooth structure of the average number of prompt neutrons per fragment as a function of the fragment mass are considered. It is shown that statistical theory can explain these phenomena provided that all effects of the nuclear are taken into account. These effects include the effect on nuclear masses and deformability. Results are shown for the neutron fission of U/sup 235/. (C.E.S.)
