The explosive phase of mode growth observed in multihelicity tearing-mode simulations of tokamak plasmas can be accounted for by a nonphysical feedback mechanism. It is shown that spatially discretized magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations admit both attracting finite-time singularities and exponential, but bounded, deviations from solutions of differential MHD. Finally, means of avoiding the nonphysical behavior, which is characterized by poor energy conservation, are given.
