Taxonomic analysis demonstrates larval morphology and phylogenetic placement in Hirstiosoma novaehollandiae, clarifying relationships within Smarididae.
Hirstiosoma novaehollandiae Womersley, 1936 is redescribed based on three males, deutonymph, and larva, which is described for the first time. These specimens were collected from leaf litter near Thames municipality, Waikato Region, New Zealand. Conspecificity between larval and postlarval stages was confirmed by means of cytochrome oxidase I barcoding. The phylogenetic position of the new species within Smarididae is inferred. Identification keys to the world genera of Smarididae and to the world species of Hirstiosoma are also provided.
