Experimental study demonstrates decoupled dual-polarization orbital angular momentum generation with high isolation, suggesting potential for dynamic multiplexed holographic imaging.
Dual‐polarization reconfigurable metasurfaces with two independent polarization modulation channels offer new opportunities for multifunctional and multitasking applications. However, most previous dual‐polarization metasurfaces can only operate in certain single polarization modes separately at a time, unable to concurrently and in parallel work in dual‐polarization modes. Moreover, they typically provide only limited 2D 1‐ or 2‐bit phase modulation capabilities, which fail to meet the requirements for real‐time fine‐tuning and independent control in complicated and parallel dual‐polarization electromagnetic (EM) systems. In this work, we propose a high‐isolation dual‐polarization reconfigurable metasurface to achieve decoupled and continuous EM manipulation of two orthogonal polarizations in the 2D direction. As a demonstration, we show the simultaneous generation of x‐polarization ( x‐pol .) and y‐polarization ( y‐pol .) vortex beams with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes on this reconfigurable metasurface under 45° linear‐polarized wave incidence. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the dual‐polarization reconfigurable metasurface can operate simultaneously and independently for two orthogonal polarizations, and the fine‐tuning EM response enables the generation of vortex beams with high‐purity OAM modes and lower background noise. Our work could advance reconfigurable metasurfaces a step closer to real‐world applications in polarization‐assisted dynamic multiplexed holographic imaging and encryption.
