Historical analysis reveals the influence of German mining graduates in Australia, highlighting critical technical solutions for processing complex refractory ores.
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the German mining academies at Freiberg and Clausthal attracted students from all over the world, including 37 from Australia. In the late nineteenth century, many graduates of both mining academies came to Australia to supply the expertise needed to address the issue of extracting non-noble metals from complex refractory sulphide ores. These graduates occupied positions as mining managers, metallurgists, and analysts in Australian companies, and a number of them taught at the newly established mining schools in various parts of Australia. Others were brought to Australia for short periods to provide expert advice. Brief biographical details are provided for these individuals.
