The middle atmosphere is a region of rich photochemical and dynamical interactions. A variety of interesting and important structures are found in the middle atmosphere including the airglow layers, the meteoric metal layers, and noctilucent clouds. Recent modeling studies have suggested that the expected increases in atmospheric CO2 and CH4 during the next century may result in significant changes in middle atmosphere temperatures, densities, and composition. Studies of this important region are now receiving considerable attention because of the interest in global change problems.
