It has usually been considered as a measure of expediency rather than one of real value in the treatment of this condition. One of the present common objections to its use is based on the premise that repeated bleeding stimulates the bone marrow excessively, tending to premature exhaustion.It was to test the validity of this premise, as applied to polycythemia vera, that this study was undertaken.
