The contributions of the so-called shake-off and two step mechanisms to the fivefold differential cross section of the double ionization of helium are studied and compared to recent theoretical results. A simple qualitative model for the estimation of the contribution of both mechanisms is proposed for experimentators. The predictions reproduce qualitatively the results of more elaborate theoretical calculations.
