The fuel cell sector faces a fundamental problem that must be addressed urgently: the absence of basic research on fuel cell technology . This article, based on my recently published book – Fuel Cells: Current Technology Challenges and Future Research Needs – provides the rationale for this ambitious research. And policymakers are given a road map that charts what can be done to change the current situation, and help realise the ultimate promise of fuel cell technology .
