The I. R. and Raman spectra of pure 1.3 dioxolan have been investigated, and the results compared with recent published work. Some slight discrepancies are explained by a fairly rapid decomposition of dioxolan in the presence of air. The bands assigned to the skeletal vibrations are broad in the liquid, and diffuse in the gas. Bands due to CH2 vibrations however preserve their rotational structure. This is tentatively explained by a flattened shape of the curve of potential energy in relation with the geometry of the molecule. The behaviour of some characteristic frequencies of dioxolan and related molecules is briefly discussed.
