Although FTIR and Raman spectroscopy have been recognized as a potentially useful tool for probing the biomolecular interactions in the mid- and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum for many years, a number of factors have hampered these techniques from being widely used in the far-infrared region. Recently, time-domain terahertz spectroscopy has emerged as an alternative, capable of probing biomolecular interactions in a noninvasive manner. Research into and technological development of terahertz wave sensing and imaging are extended from physics, electrical engineering, and materials science into the fields of chemistry, biology, and biomedicine. In this Highlight we report on the progress and frontiers of terahertz wave from biosensing point of view.
