A number of differently substituted nucleoside cyclophosphates, their synthetic precursors and structurally related compounds were studied by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. As expected, protonated and cationized molecular ions and the corresponding molecular ion clusters involving matrix molecules were observed in all cases. In addition, in some cases pronounced signals occurred which could only be explained on the basis of fast atom bombardment-induced chemical reactions within the matrix before desorption. These reactions can be classified as exchange, substitution and elimination processes. The formation of products from the last two reactions, deduced exclusively from mass spectral results, could be confirmed by subsequent high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis.
