Application of the Alfrey‐Goldfinger equations to data from terpolymerisations of styrene, methyl methacrylate and maleic anhydride leads to values of the relative reactivity (R) of styrene and methyl methacrylate towards the maleic anhydride radical that are dependent upon the concentrations of the monomers in the feeds. It is shown that it is unlikely that this effect arises from the influence of maleic anhydride‐comonomer complexes but may indicate the importance of a penultimate group effect involving styryl radicals.
