Assessment of behavioral and psychosocial factors in patients with craniomandibular disorders is a complex and time consuming task that, if neglected, will negatively affect the outcome of treatment. IMPATH: TMJ is a psychometric instrument that is designed to improve the efficiency, comprehensiveness, and reliability of identifying behavioral and psychosocial factors, reviewing illness and medical history, and determining the severity of symptoms and the impact of the problem on the patient's life. Administration of IMPATH is accomplished interactively by the patient on a microcomputer. The program automatically provides an immediate analysis and reporting of the results as well as establishes a database for clinical research. This paper describes the characteristics and development of IMPATH: TMJ and highlights its use as part of a comprehensive evaluation of a patient with a craniomandibular disorder.
