Viable adrenal cells have been isolated from human fetuses and have been maintained in monolayer cell culture. In response to several days of ACTH treatment these cultures exhibit increasing capacity for corticosteroidogenesis. In the presence of a low-serum medium, this ACTH treatment also results in increased growth of these cultures. cAMP stimulates steroidogenesis but not growth, while fetal calf serum stimulates growth but not steroidogenesis.
