The stereoselective synthesis of lippialactone was achieved in high overall yield from commercially available D-mannitol. Key reactions involved in the synthesis are preparation of required epoxide ( 5 ), its opening with vinyl Grignard reagent, and olefin cross-metathesis. A new route to a vinyl lactone ( 4 ) was explored.
