A proportional counter has been constructed with a gas amplification factor varying continuously by several orders of magnitude over the tube length. Used as a detector for monochromatic radiation, the apparatus is designed to yield a pulse spectrum mapping the locus of the incoming radiation. Simultaneous detection of spectral regions can be accomplished by means of multichannel analysing techniques. The principle was conceived for small-angle scattering of x rays, but it may well be useful in many other fields.
