To improve the sliding abrasion resistance of gray cast iron surfaces under starved lubrication, bio-inspired surface morphologies including groove lines intercalated within groove stripes were created by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The inclination angle of the machined groove lines in relation to the stripes was varied form 0° to 90°. The sliding abrasion resistance of the bio-inspired surfaces compared with smooth controls was evaluated using a pin-on-disc tribometer. It was found that the bio-inspired groove morphologies increased the anti-abrasion resistance of gray cast iron surfaces depending on the angle of the intercalated groove lines.
