We investigated the sources of disk noise on Co/Pt disks, focusing on ferromagnetic exchange coupling between grains, and found that strong exchange coupling results in low disk noise because of the suppression of fluctuation of magnetic-moments between grains. The dispersion in the (111) orientation of grains is also related to noise. The degree of surface smoothness of the SiN underlayer influences the degree of (111) orientation in Co/Pt, and the smoother surface produced by sputtering using Xe gas yielded lower disk noise. Furthermore, sputter etching of SiN decreased the noise, by contributing to stronger magnetic coupling and better (111) orientation, to a level of disk noise comparable to that of a TbFeCo disk.
