Crystal structure data are now available for more than 300 phosphorus compounds containing P-O linkages. Some basic structural features of these compounds are pointed out, and Tables of bond length data are presented. The great majority of phosphorus-oxygen compounds are based on a tetrahedral PO₄ grouping, which may be distorted in various ways when esters, condensed phosphates, or substituted derivatives are formed. The structural principles embodied in condensed phosphates and hydrogen bonded phosphates are discussed.
