The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Nepeta govaniana Benth. was examined by GC/MS and GC/FTIR. Of more than 50 components of the oil, 43 have been identified. The oil from N. govaniana is characterized by the dominant presence of C12 compounds such as: pregeijerene (38%) and geijerene (6.8%) besides trans,cis-iridolactone (14%), two nepetalactones (4.8%), as well as some mono- and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds. This is the first record of the occurrence of C12 compounds in the oil a Nepeta species.
