Following a short historical review of waveguiding in infrared and submillimeter-wave gas lasers, theories and experiments on the first operation of a distributed-feedback (DFB) gas laser are presented. This goal has been achieved by means of an optically pumped 496 mu m CH 3 F laser equipped with a hollow metal waveguide with deep periodic corrugations.
