High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Pereskia aculeata Miller (OPN) has garnered scientific attention due to its high protein content and bioactive properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antinociceptive, and anti-inflammatory. However, its antioxidant potential varies based on extraction methods and evaluation techniques, leading to variations in reported results. This systematic review assesses OPN’s antioxidant capacity using methods such as DPPH (free radical scavenging assay 2,2-diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), and ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), while comparing DPPH results with total phenolic content (TPC) at different solvent concentrations. A search across databases identified 17 studies, all conducted in Brazil from 2012 to 2023. Ethanol was the primary solvent, and DPPH was the most employed method with a range from 56.6 to 3,351.5 μg mL –1 and 1.01 to 95.6 mg GAE g –1 for TPC. Standardizing antioxidant assessment methodologies is essential for comparability and reproducibility of results. This review confirms OPN’s antioxidant potential and its relevance for future applications in nutrition and medicine.
