The course of embryonic development ofS. gregariaunder controlled conditions of temperature and humidity is described, with special attention to the water requirements of the developing egg. The development of the egg is interrupted if contact water is lacking and is resumed when the egg is moistened. This occurs at the stage of late anatrepsis, which is the stage at which the embryo of some other locusts and grasshoppers undergoes diapause.
