Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy （a-PDT） has attracted attention in the dental field, and in recent years many studies have investigated the effects of a-PDT on periodontal treatment. However, clinical studies on such effects have yielded conflicting results, and the varying irradiation conditions among the reports make it difficult to compare the results. This review presents the current studies including our recent articles and discusses the future outlook for a-PDT in periodontal treatment.
