A 0.5 percent solution of chrome azurol-S applied to the freshly exposed end-grain surface of dry wood samples produces a pink to orange colour (negative) or a bright blue colour (positive). Some wood families have one or more genera which react positively. In Vochysiaceae all genera and species react positively or intermediately to this test. Analysis of ashed wood samples that react positively revealed a high concentration of aluminum. The use of this spot-test has already proven to be a very useful adjunct to the classical methods of wood identification.
