Shale-like Co 3 O 4 (S-Co 3 O 4 ) with a micro/nano-structure was prepared via a simple pyrolysis of synthesised layer structured metal–organic compounds. The S-Co 3 O 4 exhibits expected high specific capacities, excellent cycle stability, and superior rate performance for lithium/sodium-ion batteries.
