This paper reports a study of the thermodynamics of adsorption and of adsorption hysteresis in the benzene + charcoal system. Four charcoals of differing activity were examined at five temperatures in the range 15 to 35° C. Heats and entropies of adsorption and desorption are derived from these measurements and interpreted in terms of the processes occurring during adsorption and desorption. The data are used to discuss the significance of current theories of adsorption and hysteresis, and a simple model is described which is consistent with the thermodynamic data. More detailed specification of the model requires further experimental and theoretical study.
