Variation in rainfall over small areas has been a subject of considerable interest to hydrologists and meteorologists, but, because of inadequate data, little analytical work has been possible. The precipitation‐gage network established for the Army‐Navy‐NACA‐Weather Bureau Thunderstorm and the Weather Bureau Cloud Physics Projects near Wilmington, Ohio, included 55 rain gages at approximately two‐mile intervals. Utilizing data from this network the authors have analyzed the variations in average precipitation for storms computed from networks of differing densities and the relation between point and areal‐average values of rainfall in storms.
