The partial and total DOS of the ternary compound TiC x N 1-x were calculated in the framework of the coherent potential and virtual crystal approximations for concentrations x=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. The K and L emission spectra of carbon and titanium were calculated and found to compare favourably with experiment in the case of the CPA. The calculated Fermi energy E F and the DOS at E F do not differ appreciably in the two schemes.
