A method of measuring the peak kilovoltages and the total filtration in the range 1·5–3·5 mm Al, of a diagnostic X-ray tube operated at an indicated 70 kVp is presented. It has been developed for routine use and requires only simple, and relatively robust, measuring equipment. The method is based on the measurement of absorption of the X-ray beam in aluminium, the total filtration being determined to within 0·5 mm Al from the ratio of quarter value thickness to half value thickness. The relationship between half or quarter value thickness and kilovoltage at known filtration is then used to determine the peak kV to within 3 kV.
