The pressure-induced wavelength shift of laser excited fluorescene from Cr-doped (3.7mol%) GdAlO 3 was measured up to 115kbar at room temperature in relation to the R1 shift of ruby. The two intense peaks between 720nm and 750nm were analyzed as R (broad) and neighboring pair line (NPL)-sharp, respectively. The R and NPL lines show pressure shifts of 0.0534nm/kbar and 0.088nm/kbar, respectively. The relative intensity of the NPL line changes slightly with pressure. The nearly 2.25 times greater line shift of NPL than of ruby, indicates that this material would make a good pressure sensor.
