(1) Survival was recorded at intervals in five cohorts of Atriplex vesicaria seedlings germinating between February 1979 and August 1985. This paper considers survivorship in relation to microtopography, soil surface conditions and proximity to mature shrubs. (2) For various cohorts and times, survival of seedlings varied with soil surface, microtopography and proximity to large shrubs. There was no consistency, however, between cohorts as to which microsites supported greatest survival.
