The interaction mean free paths in nuclear emulsion of relativistic projectile fragments, $3<~Z<~26$, emitted from heavy-ion beams of ⁴⁰Ar and ⁵⁶Fe at an energy of {~}2 GeV/nucleon have been measured, and they gave evidence for anomalously shorter mean free paths in the first 2-3 cm after their production than at larger distances. Some characteristics of the primary and the secondary interactions connected with the anomaly are presented.
