The solid state structures, solvatochromic, perichromic and acidochromic properties of four merocyanine-type dyes derived from (thio)barbituric acid and 4- N , N -dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde and their use as perichromic probe molecules for coloured surfaces are presented.
