From spectra of an arc running through a sulphuryl chloride (SO 2 Cl 2 ) liquid vortex, transition probabilities have been measured for the S I multiplets 4s 3 S 0 -5p 3 P, 4s 5 S 0 -5p 5 P and 4s 3 S 0 -4p' 3 P occurring at the approximate wave-lengths 5278, 4694 and 4157 Å, the results being respectively 3.50, 5.83 and 7.96 in units of 10 5 sec -1 . Transition probabilities for a few O I lines appear as a by-product and the best of these (for λ 3947) is used as a rough control for absolute scaling of the S I measurements. Some arc-column wobble observations, relevant to correcting measured end-on column intensities to absolute values, are included.
