The effect of temperature (15°C, 25°C, 35°C) and oxygen (7%, 14%, 21%) on lignin biodegradation by the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium was assessed in a 3×3 batch culture factorial design experiment. There was a decrease in lignin concentration with time as a function of increasing temperature and oxygen concentration. Oxygen concentration showed a much smaller overall effect on the process (21.6%) as compared with temperature (63.8%) with less than 2% interaction between the variables.
