When the usual doses of desiccated thyroid were given, the patients became weaker, and in some the picture of adrenal insufficiency developed. It was shown that in these patients myxedema was only part of a more widespread glandular failure resulting from primary insufficiency of the anterior pituitary gland. The name "pituitary myxedema" was suggested for this condition.
