Qualitative case study uncovers sustainability factors in a public architectural community, highlighting the value of shared domains and local engagement.
This study examines an architectural learning community created by architects, journalists, and experts in dialogue with public participants. Based in Kagurazaka, Tokyo, the initiative expands access to architectural learning for those seeking to engage with the field and support its sustainability. Using the Communities of Practice (CoP) framework, the study clarifies the community’s lifecycle from formation to dispersed development. Interviews and internal documents reveal that establishing a resonant domain, fostering community connections through diverse expressive activities, and developing practices across different localities collectively contributed to the community’s continuity and broader growth.
