Difference-in-differences analysis reveals that artificial intelligence pilot zones significantly suppress corporate greenwashing in Chinese firms, highlighting AI's role in environmental governance.
Corporate greenwashing hinders ‘dual carbon’ goals. This study explores the impact of National New Generation AI Innovation and Development Pilot Zone (AIIDPZ) projects on corporate greenwashing via a staggered DID approach using Chinese firms’ data. Results show AIIDPZ significantly suppresses greenwashing, with robustness confirmed. Channels involve information asymmetry, monitoring, and corporate governance. Heterogeneity analysis reveals stronger effects in SOEs, high-profit, high-digitalization firms, and regions with high electricity consumption/generation. This provides micro-evidence for AI’s role in environmental governance and policy insights for curbing greenwashing and promoting corporate green transformation.
